A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
