Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Manchester City Links as Pure Rumour

Enzo Maresca was once an coach to Pep Guardiola with Manchester City.

Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has labelled recent reports linking him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".

The Italian manager, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester, responded to the ongoing speculation surrounding his next move.

Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, has a contract running through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year option.

"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."

He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."

Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.

Strain Following Recent Remarks

Maresca's most recent statement follow after he described a recent 48-hour period as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.

Those original remarks had fueled widespread talk of a potential rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.

When asked if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton press conference, no."

The Italian however affirmed he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to keep backing the team".

In more positive news, Maresca revealed that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, potentially available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.

Analysis: Unresolved Tension

The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an unhealed issue that continues to cause concern.

While there has been no further escalation of the matter publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, leaving the matter unaddressed.

The mood during these press conferences has grown notably awkward, leading to fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a decent start to the season.

Chelsea's sporting situation is positive: they are fourth in the league, have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and can secure a better European position with good results in their remaining games.

The prevailing question is whether this behind-the-scenes situation might begin to affect a team that was just starting to look settled.
