Educating a Baby to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The company behind the advertisement states that what appears like "extravagance or oddity" is in fact "deliberate investment in initial learning".

"Parents based in north London seeks an extraordinary and qualified tutor to assist their most junior child on his early path to growing into an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this post, you might naturally skip the wording "initial stages" as mere a turn of phrase.

But, it could be the most significant element of this unique employment listing, as it seeks to find a tutor for a infant.

Many of submissions have already been received since the unnamed family published their call for the Β£180,000 per year tutor, who has to be "someone very special".

During the past few weeks, the listing has received notice throughout the news, with numerous asking why?

Innovative Idea

The CEO, head and founder of an education consultancy, which is supporting the family in their search, explained that in spite of first scepticism, he viewed the idea "far sighted", and "innovative".

When he consulted the family, he mentioned they understood the atypical character of their requirement, and how young their son is.

However, they stated that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to get a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that stage "cultural influence had by then set in".

What precisely did the family mean by "cultural leaning"?

It's "all-encompassing", the expert replied. "How you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the firstborn had adopted "very nuanced, unspoken signals" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family informed the consultant they hoped to prevent history to happen again with their infant.

The intention: To bring in a British tutor, who must speak with RP, to guide the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
Tutors International say the listing has sparked a larger conversation about how households view education, advantage and the part of home and culture in learning.

Natural Absorption

"Much of the development at the start here is rather absorbed naturally," explained the CEO.

It's by means of this osmosis that the family are hoping the child will pick up the British traits they wish to cultivate.

He noted the tutor needed to be someone who went to "prestigious academies – the same kinds of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The instructor must be the suitable individual, they'll be performing things they don't even know they're doing, just naturally," he said.

Money No Object

The family informed him the chosen tutor should ideally also have knowledge of or interest in horse riding, winter sports, the arts and musical activities so as to influence the child in a wide range of hobbies.

More than that though, he stated the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a range of lessons so the child would be "pony-riding and picking up an musical instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's perspective, guiding their son develop into a "UK sophisticate" will result in achievement and open doors.

"For all the pros and cons of that, because it's certainly a status symbol," he comments.

However, despite all this instruction in "English culture", could the child absorb what is termed cultural leaning from the globally influenced family he resides with regardless?

"Yes", answered he. "They realize this could fail, but they've merely embraced the perspective of, 'let's give it a go and we should start as quickly as we can', because the expense of it is not a concern," he stated.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

Several in the private teaching field who express these doubts.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of a tutoring service, who supplies individual instructors, wrote that "the journey of embracing two identities, or indeed, discovering oneself, is something that must be grown into, not engineered."

Peter explained that he had moved from China to the UK at the time of childhood, and had been brought up knowing and practicing both cultures. He continued to be educated at Cambridge University.

Peter Cui was the first individual born in China to be selected to the position of Treasurer of the university debating society.

"The idea that an individual can serve as a embodiment of Britishness, a person who can somehow transfer the characteristics of a British gentleman to a one-year-old child, appears optimistic and unfeasible," he commented.

"In my experience, employing a quintessentially English tutor from babyhood will not necessarily create the result they hope for.

"I wasn't provided with that kind of mentor, and nevertheless I have been fortunate enough to experience several of the opportunities they aspire for their son."

He continued: "The fact is, personal identity can not be forced from the outside influences; it must be selected, and it must be internally driven."

Acquiring Englishness

Certainly, Britishness is something the expert believes can be educated – and marketed.

"In my view the reality that the international society regards us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
