The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
